What did you do over your Rodeo Break?

Here is the Tucson area we are lucky to have what is called Rodeo Break. We get 2 days off in February for the La Fiesta de los Vaqueros. We can use this time to enjoy the Rodeo, spend time with family or even to travel.

Did you do anything exciting over this 4 day weekend? Did you learn anything new?

Please comment below with something you did or learned.

Thank you,

  1. Over this years Rodeo Break I was able to spend time in New Mexico with my daughter (who is in college there). We explored some of the Wild West history that happened in that state.

First was a visit to Silver City, the childhood home to William H. Bonney, history knows him better as Billy the Kid. He grew up in this New Mexico town until his mother passed away around the time he was 14. Then the troubles began. He was sent away to Arizona but eventually came back to New Mexico.

Next was a visit to Lincoln, New Mexico where Billy the Kid found work on a ranch. There was some terrible fighting that happened here called the Lincoln Wars. It ended with Billy the Kid accused of killing some people and eventually being sentenced to hang. He escaped and killed 2 more people.

He was eventually killed near Fort Sumner, New Mexico at the age of 21. (Hope to visit Fort Sumner on next visit to New Mexico).

Lastly, we visited the area of Alamogordo, New Mexico where some of the earliest space programs during the Space Race years took place. Here you find a museum that shows the history of Space Exploration that happened in New Mexico.

Look to my teacher blog or our facebook pages to see pictures from this trip.
