End of 1st semester 5th grade 2013-2014

Well we have reached the end of the 1st semester of our 2013-2014 grade 5 year.

We have worked hard in both reading and math. We have seen improvement in math that is fantastic. Keep up the great work!

In reading we haven't seen the growth that we should have so far this year. Could it be the new curriculum or could it be something else? It is hard to say but if we are doing as much reading as we can outside of school we should have seen more improvement.

There is only one real way to get better at reading, and that is to READ!

Read often, read as much as you can, read for fun, read for information, read to learn.

So for the rest of the year we encourage you to read every single day for as long as you can.

Have a fabulous break, read lots, and enjoy knowing that you are special and have every opportunity for greatness. Make the choice to be something great.

Thank you,

What we learned today. . .

Today we started to learned howto raise our classroom expectations higher. We did this by learning how to use our brains in class better-to activate our brains and to interact with others in a controlled learning filled environment.

1st we learned and practiced CLASS! YES!

CLASS! YES!

2nd we learned and practiced TEACH! OKAY!

TEACH! OKAY!

3rd we learned and practiced 5 CLASSROOM RULES!

5 CLASSROOMS RULES!

Finally we reviewed the things we learned today so that we can have our brains engaged and learn, learn, learn!

REVIEW

We will continue to learn how to engage our brains, so stay tuned.

Thank you,

Our Desks :-( or :-)

The desk fairy has been by our classroom to check on our desks:

Did we have desks that were neat and organized? Can we find what we need quickly?

Or did we have desks that were a mess. Where we can't find what we need? Does our desk try and throw up on us when we take things out?

Here are some pictures of our desks taken today after school. What do you think?

But Teacher I can do it. . .

"If you say you understand something,

then you can explain what you understand to others.

Anything short of that is deception, not understanding.

Education, above all, should not be about fostering deception.

In the same vein, anything not understood in more than one

way is not understood at all."

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

Something new for this year. . . Classroom TWITTER

This year we will be using a new way to check our learning that includes learning about technology.

Classroom Twitter

We will write daily about what we learned, questions we have, things we still don't understand about, etc.

We will do it in the form of a TWEET, like they do on Twitter.

We will have a Twitter feed.

And each week several of our Classroom Tweets will be chosen to be posted on the class's real Twitter account for the world to see what we are doing.

Nanooks Online @NanooksOnline

How cool is that! So come check it out.
